Sleepy Time.

I wrote this as a lullaby from memories of rocking my daughter Shannon to sleep. There is a generic version  > (below) that you can sing to any child.

//-start of poem-\\

It’s sleepy time for baby
Sleepy time, it’s true
It’s sleepy time for Shannon
Sleeping shall renew

I love you, precious dolly
Love the things you do
I love you, perfect daughter
Love the way you coo

    I wonder: am I worthy?
    (haven’t got a clue)
    I wonder: am I lucky?
    (maybe I’m just due)

I rock you, darling angel
Rocking right on queue
I rock a rocking rhythm
Rocking just for you

Your eyelids are now closing
Eyelids: one and two
Your eyelids flutter open…
Eyelids close anew

    I wonder: am I worthy?
    (haven’t got a clue)
    I wonder: am I lucky?
    (maybe I’m just due)

Your dreaming is so peaceful
Dreams and dreams ensue
Your dreaming drifts serenely
Dreams and dreams accrue

This hushing hush now hovers
Hushing soothes the view
This hushing is so soothing
Hushing soothes me too

    I wonder: am I worthy?
    (haven’t got a clue)
    I wonder: am I lucky?
    (maybe I’m just due)

It’s sleepy time for Shannon
Sleepy time for you
It’s sleepy time for baby
Sleep the whole night through

Author's Comments

I thought of this poem one night while remembering the utter joy it was to hold my daughter Shannon, rock her gently, and watch as she gradually drifted off to sleep. I couldn't believe at the time that I was so lucky to have her. Of course, soon thereafter, I lost her (and my reason for living) in a bitter divorce. I never saw her again until she was an adult. See all of the poems that Shannon inspired  > here.

For the last 2 years or so, I have been writing a book of poetry using the poems on this site. The book is somewhat like this site in that it presents the poems from several perspectives, like selecting one of the sort views herein. However, more than half of the book is also a guidebook (or textbook) on structured poetry. It defines all the terms involved in poetry and provides detailed analysis of each of my poem's structures. One of the things I hoped to do with this site was to generate interest in real poetry and get paid to teach surfers of this site how to write structured poetry. All of those teaching techniques have been included in that book. Go to  > Purchase, Products to buy that book. I revised my book to include this poem.

I will write a personalized poem just for you. Go to  > Purchase, Services (Services from Poet Roamoff) to see how to order one (and how to provide information I will use to write the poem).
