Oh Shannon, So Perfect.
//-start of poem-\\
Oh daughter, be happy.
Oh daughter, have fun.
I know life seems crappy.
Has misery won?
Your sadness so haunts me.
Your sorrows do stun.
I know life seems daunting.
So what should be done?
Your school is so stressful.
Your roommate’s so dumb.
Yet you’re so successful.
Plus pleasure has come:
Your pets are amusing.
And girl can they run!
Those names that you’re choosing:
They’re totally fun!
Oh Shannon, so perfect.
Oh Shannon, so young.
So kind and deserving.
Your life has begun.
Oh Shannon, I love you.
Prerequisites: none!
My soul sails above you.
You are number one!
Your writings are stunning.
They wield wonderland.
They’re crafty and cunning.
Oh daughter, you’re grand!
Your left-brain and right-brain
Can work hand-in-hand.
Though sometimes they’re fighting.
They both take a stand.
Your writings read smartly
(From left-brain’s control).
They’re also quite artsy
(That’s right-brain’s main role).
You have a huge heart now.
You’re so beautiful.
You cause such a spark now.
You’re great and graceful.
Oh Shannon, so perfect.
Oh Shannon, so young.
So kind and deserving.
Your life has begun.
Oh Shannon, I love you.
Prerequisites: none!
My soul soars above you.
You are number one!
You’re charming and funny.
Your humor is great.
Your smile is so sunny.
So don’t hesitate.
You’re lovely and gracious.
Of this: no debate!
Your reading’s voracious.
You’re filled with great traits!
Oh Shannon, so perfect.
Oh Shannon, so young.
So kind and deserving.
Your life has begun.
Oh Shannon, I love you.
Prerequisites: none!
My soul sails above you.
You’re my number one!

I love my daughter, Shannon, more than anything in the world. I wasn't there for most of her early childhood and teenage years. I wish I could have been there for her. She has inspired most of my best poetry. See all of those poems > here.
This is my first poem in about a year. For the last 12 months, I have been writing a book of poetry using the poems on this site. The book is somewhat like this site in that it presents the poems from several perspectives, like selecting one of the sort views herein. However, more than half of the book is also a guidebook (or textbook) on structured poetry. It defines all the terms involved in poetry and provides detailed analysis of each of my poem's structures. One of the things I hoped to do with this site was to generate interest in real poetry and get paid to teach surfers of this site how to write structured poetry. All of those teaching techniques have been included in that book. Go to > Purchase, Products to buy that book.
When I was almost done with the book, my daughter had some difficulty with the meaning of life - the typical difficulties we all struggle with. It hurt me so much to hear of her struggles that I stopped and wrote this poem. Then I rewrote portions of the book to include this poem. This poem sometimes makes me cry when I recite it.
In my more recent works (since November 2005), I rarely reuse the same meter on another poem (meaning I try to invent a new meter for each - a daunting task). But I "accidentally" used this meter more than once. See my > biography (near the end, I list some of the poems that use this meter).
I will write a personalized poem just for you. Go to > Purchase, Services (Services from Poet Roamoff) to see how to order one (and how to provide information I will use to write the poem).
