Pomposity.
//-start of poem-\\
Volcano’s erupting
Its insides are busting
Its dome is filled with crust.
Its lava is flowing
Its color is glowing
The air is filled with dust.
The people are waking
The ground is now shaking
They’ve played this game before.
They keep right on working
While doom's day is lurking
Whose threat they just ignore.
There’s dust in their nose now
The lava flows close now
And hence the risk grows grand.
The ground’s getting hotter
They douse it with water
It hurts for them to stand.
Despite what they’re seeing
Most opt against fleeing
They think they will survive.
The dust falls like raining
Against which they’re straining
They strive to stay alive.
They think they’re immortal
They stare at death’s portal
But stop as if time froze.
The air’s not improving
They’re no longer moving
This is the fate they chose.
They’re frozen so neatly
And buried completely
Just waiting to be found.
But then they’re discovered
And partly uncovered
Still frozen to the ground.
Their city’s now open
And tourists are gropin’
Those statues in abound.
Pompeii is unveiling
Pomposity’s failing
Immortals all around.

I like the fact that this poem has 6-syllable lines throughout, but the meter makes it feel otherwise. In my more recent works (since November 2005), I rarely reuse the same meter on another poem (meaning I have to invent a new meter for each - a daunting task). But I like this meter so much I have used it more than once. See my > biography (near the end, I list some of the poems that use this meter).
I also have written other poems like this one about places or monuments. See my > biography (near the end, I list some of the poems that are of this place or monument genre).
I will write a personalized poem just for you. Go to > Purchase, Services (Services from Poet Roamoff) to see how to order one (and how to provide information I will use to write the poem).
