Surgery’s Knife.
//-start of poem-\\
It’s that time again.
Time’s a ticking clock.
It starts sinking in:
Time to see the doc.
It just worries you
That something’s amiss.
It’s something quite new
That you feel like this.
It’s time to check-in:
Time to sign your name.
It’s worries again:
Time’s a waiting game.
It’s that magazine
That’s written so dumb.
It’s that waiting scene
That makes you feel numb.
It’s your time at last.
Time to go inside.
It’s your heart that’s fast.
Time to run and hide.
It’s that doctor’s nurse
That checks your heart rate.
Its reading is worse
That tells your heart’s state.
It’s time to feel old,
Time's no perjury.
It’s time you were told,
Time for surgery.
It arrives too quick
That day you so dread.
It makes you feel sick
That fear in your head.
It’s in that small gown:
Time to slowly creep.
It’s time to lay down,
Time to go to sleep.
It courses your veins,
That drug is a buzz.
It hides all the pains
That surgery does.
It’s time to awake,
Time appears to hover.
It's starting to ache.
Time starts to recover.
It’s painful alright
That place that they cut.
It’s giving you fright
That makes your eyes shut.
It causes much pain.
Time ticks but not soon.
It causes disdain.
Time heals all such wounds.
It is a rough ride
That healing tall task.
It tests you inside
That courageous mask.
It takes time to heal.
Time slowly helps out.
It shapes how you feel.
Time eases all doubt.
It gives one more chance
That surgery knife.
It’s that circumstance
That lengthens your life.

When I was told I needed somewhat major surgery, I wrote this poem in anticipation of the event (it turned out to be correct...). I like the "ticking" feel that the reuse of "it", "that", and "time" establish. The back-and-forth minor meter changes are purposeful to create edginess.
I wrote this poem about six months before the surgery was actually done in January of 2007. I had a second surgery about 16 months after this one (late March, 2008) and I wrote > another surgery poem about that.
