Shock and Awe.
(warning: might be politically offensive to some readers)
//-start of poem-\\
It’s a boy! What a joy!
We’ll buy him every toy!
He’s so cute! What a hoot!
Our infant seems astute!
He grows fast. Childhood’s passed.
How come it didn’t last?
He’s at school. He’s no fool.
He’ll learn every tool.
Life’s not fair. They don’t care.
They make him register.
He gets called. School is stalled.
And off to war he’s hauled.
He gets caught. He gets shot.
What rotten luck he’s got.
He turns pale. Life signs fail.
No help is of avail.
No one stares. No one cares.
He’s not in any prayers.
It’s so dumb. This boy’s numb.
And no one lifts a thumb.
A girl’s harmed: We come armed!
We all seem so alarmed!
In our land, girls are grand.
While boys aren’t worth a damn.
War’s no pearl. So send girls.
Watch coffin flags unfurl:
Shock and awe! Drop the jaw!
Her death is no “hoorah”!
Leaders bend. All wars end.
Treat enemies as friends.

This poem is in response to my dismay over the mistreatment of men in our society. There is no doubt that rape and child abuse are bad, but killing someone is definitely worse since it is final. We disproportionately prematurely kill so many men, and seem to place less value on it than we should. Imagine the outrage over the Iraq war if instead of "just" killing or maiming our men, we replaced each of those occurrences with a rape of a woman. I don't think this war would have lasted so long. (Just because women are serving in Iraq is not enough; they suffer way fewer casualties than the men percentage-wise). It is appropriate to value children more than adults. It is not appropriate to value a man's life way less than a woman's as we currently do. When does a valuable boy suddenly become a throw-away man? Among men, only the filthy rich seem to have value in our society. I value all adults equally. If we all did that in our society, then our filthy rich men would be way less likely to start wars and our women would be less likely to keep them going. (Women can prevent or stop wars at any time since they hold a very significant majority of the voting pool. If all women voted one way and all men voted the other way, the outcome would be a landslide.)
