A Father’s Lament.
//-start of poem-\\
The sun no longer shines
The moon stops making rounds
The stars no longer twinkle
The day she’s not around.
Grand mountains lose their summits
Vast valleys are no more
Verve rivers lose their bearings
The day she’s out the door.
Posh oceans become deserts
Lush lakes turn into clay
Fresh forests become wastelands
The day she goes away.
Full flowers shed their petals
Wild weeds begin to grow
Proud pine trees shed their needles
The day she has to go.
Cute kittens cannot cuddle
Bold birds no longer fly
Pert puppies cannot snuggle
The day she says goodbye.
Pet ponies are not ridden
Toy teddies sleep alone
Plush pandas are so lonesome
The day she leaves my home.
Sore sadness reins supremely
Harsh hurting coats the air
Dank darkness rains around me
The day she isn’t there.
So life’s not worth the living
And foods lose all their taste
While work’s not worth the effort
The day she leaves my place.
I really love my daughter
I really am her dad
I really miss my baby
Divorce is really bad.

I love my daughter, Shannon, more than anything in the world. I wasn't there for most of her early childhood and teenage years. I wish I could have been there for her. She has inspired most of my best poetry. See all of those poems > here.
This is my favorite poem. It really expresses the pain that men endure, courtesy of our completely evil judicial system. I was totally devastated by my divorce (that I fought every step of the way). It's amazing how the needs of the child (to have a full-time father) are completely ignored in our country.
I have received lots of emotion-filled responses from readers of this poem. A large majority have been from women. I appreciate all of them.
Besides the fact that this poem really expresses my emotions, I am also proud of its style. Its forgiving structure seems to compensate for loose rhyme throughout.
I think this could be made into a song. I have ideas for some parts of it. If you want to help me write the music for this (I will pay or share profits) please send an email to > Roamoff@JustPlainPoetry.com.
I will write a personalized poem just for you. Go to > Purchase, Services (Services from Poet Roamoff) to see how to order one (and how to provide information I will use to write the poem).
I rewrote this poem in 2010. The original 2006 version was this:
