Sunrise?

(warning: might be politically offensive to some readers)

//-start of poem-\\

sunrise o’er mountainous slope
sunrise o’er world full of hope
hope that the birds are in flight
hope that the world is alright
right in its treatment of men
right when hurt happens again
’gain in the midst of a war
’gain while ignoring the poor
pouring more wealth t’ward the rich
pouring the poor in the ditch
ditching the needs of most all
ditching most children’s sad call
calling things black that are white
calling rich filthy men bright
brightening the corporate elite
brightening executioner’s feat
featuring religious fanatics
featuring less christian like antics
ticking t’ward ultimate doom
ticking in washington’s room
room for more men behind bars
room for more s.u.v. cars
cars that consume the world’s oil
cars that destroy fragile soil
soiling the lives of most men
soiling ’bout nine out of ten

ten tons of pollutants not air
ten species destroyed way up there
there won’t be nice sunsets ahead
there will be destruction instead

Author's Comments

This is my "epiphany" poem. I had been trying for years to compose truly original poetry (my own meters and styles). An English Professor had challenged me to invent my own styles and had told me to consider breaking from absolutely perfect meter when slight variations can really add to the poem. That was very difficult for me because I hate that "free-form" garbage that requires no talent and has no structure. It is NOT poetry. I also detest published "poems" that have rhyme but no attempt at meter. They are nothing more than "free-form" trash where the author has taken a syllable at the end of every other line or so and has modified it to rhyme with another one. Poetry that has both rhyme and meter requires work on every syllable to make sure the cadence (as well as the rhyme) matches. My contempt for non-metered poetry had led me to be too stringent with my meters. This poem broke that mold. Its meter is not absolutely fixed, but its unique alliteration completely compensates for that. I wrote it in response to my anger and disgust over the Iraq war. After this poem, I started composing what I think are mostly professional-quality poems.

I will write a personalized poem just for you. Go to  > Purchase, Services (Services from Poet Roamoff) to see how to order one (and how to provide information I will use to write the poem).
