In addition, we rate other "poetry" sites. If the site appears to have no or limited standards, we call it C.R.A.P. (Cannot Regard As Poetry); otherwise we give it our recommendation. Again, we welcome > email comments about sites' ratings.

We expect that many poets who will contribute to our site will be "starving artists". Some may let us display a lot of their poetry and others may give us only samples. Some of them may have other products or services they want you to purchase. Those products may be on our site or may be at a link they have provided. (We do not always review those links or sites.) Please do not get frustrated if you cannot see more of an author's works on our site. They need to make some money for their efforts. Some of them may provide a direct email address you can use to contact them. (We do not validate those addresses.) And we allow you to send us an > email with your comments about a poet. We read all of them and forward most of them (throwing out clearly offensive ones). Additionally, you may start or join > discussion threads involving any subject including your feelings about poems and poets.

We keep tallies of every poem that receives votes. At the bottom, you are allowed to rate the poem whether you liked it, thought it was "OK", or disliked it. We keep only the most recent vote on each poem for each unique User ID. If you are not logged in, we keep only the most recent vote for each poem from that computer. Each vote, whether from a logged in user or not, is tallied to create the " > Overall Liked" and " > Recent Liked" sort orders for poems (there are primary and secondary sort orders for many poem lists). Those lists are created by everyone's votes and are available to everyone. You don't need to be logged in to vote. However, if you have established a User ID and are logged in, your votes are also used to maintain your very own personal preference lists (poem sort orders). See " > My Liked", " > My OKed", " > My Disliked", and " > My Not Voted". Those lists are created by you and are available to you alone. Also, if you are logged in, your most recent vote is displayed for each poem (both on the poem list and at the bottom of that poem). If you are not logged in, the personal voting preference lists are not available. User IDs are not used in any way to > purchase products or services (so you do not need to be logged in or have a User ID to do so). See > FAQ for more information about this.

Periodically we proportionally divvy > generic donations to the site among the poets based on those getting the most viewer ratings of "liked" or "OK" and not "disliked" (after keeping a reasonable amount for our costs to maintain the site). See > FAQ for a complete description of how the votes are tallied. If desired, you can see the poetry on our site sorted by those voted "most liked" by viewers (see > Poetry - By Liked).

Please donate to this site. Go to > Purchase - Donate. Besides generic contributions, you can earmark your donation to a specific poet and can even insist that the earmark be contingent upon that poet providing more poetry on this site.

One particular e-product you can purchase is the ability to post your own evaluation of a poem on our site and your own "biography page" (much like those we allow poets to have) - which can be an advertising page containing a reciprocal link of your choice.

We abhor the flood of "free-form" (anything goes) writings that others mislabel as poetry. Structured poetry requires time and talent. Much of that other stuff seems to be "stream of consciousness" musings from people who instead should be spilling their guts in group therapy. Parents reward children who do crayon drawings by posting those works on the refrigerator. As the child grows, parents demand artistic expression before displaying their efforts. We are frustrated when others allow "crayon-like writings" in their sites and contests. We are disgusted with the recitations that many so-called "Poetry Slams" contain. We regard them as "Poetry Shams" or "Poetry Scams" and we urge you to boycott them until they start applying some standards. We are not saying that all free-form poetry is no good. We simply believe that this lack of standards has created a conduit for lots of pure trash to be published and has created a culture that is afraid to critique the garbage. By the same token we are not saying that all structured poetry is good. We simply believe that some structure is necessary. If you disagree with this philosophy, then so be it. Simply stay off our site and continue wading in the free-form flood that is out there.

The book is somewhat like this site in that it presents the poems from several perspectives, like selecting one of the sort views herein. However, more than half of the book is also a guidebook (or textbook) on structured poetry. It defines all the terms involved in poetry and provides detailed analysis of each of Roamoff's poem's structures. One of the things we hoped to do with this site was to generate interest in real poetry and get paid to teach surfers of this site how to write structured poetry. All of those teaching techniques have been included in that book. The book is over 600 pages.
